This book presents a selection of paintings and drawings by the artist from the past five years. It is accompanied by a text by Max Weintraub, PhD in Art History, President and CEO of the Allentown Art Museum, Pennsylvania, United States.
Nodding to the great painters of modernity, notably Picasso and Matisse, Orchard’s paintings engage with their styles and subjects through more abstract representations of the female nude. Building the figure plane by plane, or through each abstract fragment she shapes in thick, textured paint, Orchard explores the possibilities of representing the female body. While the female nude has long been embedded in art history as a muse, and more recently as an object of study, Orchard renews its significance by infusing it with her own experience as an artist: trained in life drawing, she has also posed and taught in life drawing classes.
