Haile Selassie was the former emperor of Ethiopia (1930–1974) and one of the most significant figures in African history. Champion of African unity and independence, Selassie is revered as a symbol of resistance against colonialism and is worshiped as the messiah within Rastafarianism. On this bandana, H.I.M. is placed slightly above Queen Elizabeth II, recalling an alleged encounter between the two monarchs at which the queen is said to have bowed in recognition of Selassie’s higher rank as emperor.
